Monday, August 9th, 2010

If you want your website to do well in the search engines then it is important to take care of SEO. So when it comes to designing your website, your web designer will want to keep this in mind. Some web designers might feel that SEO is a bit below them, but these are the types who build beautiful websites that nobody visits. And there are other web designers who won’t bother at all with SEO as they don’t really care what happens to your site once you have paid them for designing it. Choosing a web designer such as this will ensure that your website is doomed to fail before it even gets going. The web designer you choose should be one with an understanding of SEO and the following information will help you to learn how to spot them.

- Flash applications can be counterproductive to SEO efforts and a good web designer will know this and will refrain from using them too much. You will find that they won’t suggest that you use them as an intro to your site and they won’t suggest that you use background music.

- Good web designers will not rubbish how important SEO is nor will he tell you that he is going to look after it when everything is finished. Incorporating SEO efforts into the design process is essential if you want your website to work.

- You will know you have a good web designer if he understands the importance of SEO and does not look like he doesn’t know what you are talking about if you bring it up. You shouldn’t be told that SEO is not the job of the web designer.

- A web designer that is good will actually be concerned about whether or not your website is going to be successful. So they may want to offer advice that is different to the instructions you have given and they will be able to help when it comes to search engine optimisation.

All website owners understand the advantages of getting Search Engine Optimisation. SEO firms can help you with your website by many means, and some of these are Free Content. There is no point in walking a lone furrow when it comes to SEO, so enlist the help of some experts. SEO isn’t the only thing you should think about though because, Web Hosting Reviews are also important.

An Introduction To Domains

Friday, June 18th, 2010

Without a domain name, web sites are specified by an IP address. An IP address is an identifier that is used by computers or humans to determine the location of a web server or web site. However, for humans, an IP address, which is written in a numerical form, can be difficult to remember. This is why domain names were invented. With a domain, people can locate a web site through more user-friendly words or phrases. And although numbers can be a part of a domain name, they usually do not make up all of it, like what is seen with an IP address.

A domain consists of several parts. The first part of the domain is known as the protocol. The protocol tells the browser what the domain is going to point to. This will usually be ‘http’, which means the browser can expect to locate a hypertext document.  In layman’s terms this means webpage. In the rare cases the URL is not ‘http’; it may be ‘ftp’ instead’, which means file transfer protocol. A webmaster would use ftp if they would like visitors to download files from their server.

The second part of the will be the subdomain. An example is “ftp”, which means “file transfer protocol.” If a web site consists of more than one server, the subdomain helps to identify the specific server to connect to.

The subdomain is followed by the actual domain, which can be a combination of letters, numbers or phrases.  A good domain name will be short, memorable and most importantly, search-engine friendly. In fact, some webmasters tend to concentrate more on a domain name’s effectiveness with SEO, (or Search Engine Optimization), than they do its creativity. To do this, they make sure to choose a domain name that has a widely searched keyword.

The final portion of the domain name is what is known as an extension. This lets a person know a little bit more about the website’s origins. For example, take .com, the most common domain extension. It stands for ‘commercial’, and was originally intended for organizations in that vein. However, the extension is now used by almost everyone looking to create a web site. And this is for good reason, since most web surfers will think about the .com before they would think about .org, .biz or .net. Yet, don’t think that other extensions can’t become memorable either. Consider Wikipedia.org which is a very popular website despite its .org extension.

Domain name extensions can also specify which country a web site is from. An example are country-based extensions such as .uk, (which stands for United Kindom), or .jp, (which stands for Japan). They can also be state-based, such as .ca, (which stands for California).  Both can serve as excellent tools for localized Internet marketing.

To get a domain name, an Internet user can either: 1) get one from their web hosting company, provided they offer that service or 2) get one from a separate domain name company. The price things will vary with each option, though typically the cost will range from $6.50 to $35.

An Affordable Website Design Service

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

OK, so you have come round to the idea that you need an internet prescence. You have started to come to terms that the internet is the future of advertising. What has worked in previous years such as newspaper advertising may well now be a thing of the past. We all have to move with the times if we are to continue to succeed.

The scary thing for many new webmasters is all of the initial costs of setting up a website. I remember all too well just how expensive it was around ten years ago when I had my first website designed and built. It was based on the subject of speech therapy for stammering and I was investing in this new site at a time when I did not have a great deal of money. It has however one of the best investments that I have ever made. The website certainly enabled a lot of people to find out about the how to stop stuttering service that I offer.

The initial costs of setting up a website include paying for the design, the domain and the web hosting. Then there are the ongoing costs of web promotion; there is of course no point in having a top notch website if nobody ever visits it.

So how can we obtain a web design service for an affordable fee? Just like it is in other forms of business it is not so much what you know but who you know. It is a good idea to ask your friends and colleagues if they know of any professional web designers, especially if these friends or colleagues already have a website. This may well help you to obtain a quote on what is referred to as mates rates.

The second way is to speak to freelance web designers as these people usually offer cheaper rates than the web design agencies. A lot of new web designers offer a cheaper fee whilst they are attempting to build up their web design portfolio.

Whether you want a web design for your upvc front door business or your dog insurance business, in fact whichever business you have I am sure that the above tips will help.

Good luck.

What Are VPS Technologies About?

Saturday, January 23rd, 2010

Virtual Private Server (VPS) technology has become a popular alternative to more traditional shared hosting, as it offers far greater flexibility at a not much higher price. Unfortunately, the complexity of choosing the best virtualization technology for a given situation is usually far greater than are the much simpler choices required for a shared host. If you’re planning to use VPS technology but don’t know the choices, I’ll present you with a few popular virtualization technologies.

Generally speaking, there are two major categories of virtualization technology, each coming with its advantages and disadvantages. The first and simplest type works at the operating system level. When a new server is provisioned, a fresh OS install is made in a subdirectory on the hosting system, with the new server run in its own virtual space. The server and its processes are still visible to the main operating system, although they are separated from any other virtual installations. This way the users and processes of different servers do not interfere with one another.

This particular kind of operating system virtualization has several major advantages. It generally needs fewer resources than other virtualization technologies, which makes it cheaper to manage. Servers of this sort can also generally be administered more easily and reliably, as they rely on the host’s kernel and are generally not prone to lockups introduced by using custom kernels with other virtualization solutions.

However, there are some drawbacks, too. With operating system virtualization you cannot use any OS or its version other than the one installed on the host. One consequence of using OS-level virtualization is that upgrading OS to take advantage of new technologies may result impossible, since hosts each time have to justify upgrading all their servers. It is also difficult to thoroughly isolate and control resource use such that one user’s server does not consume more than their allotted share.

Another virtualization technology involves emulating the underlying hardware of an operating system, and then installing it on top of the virtual computer. Since virtual servers are for all purposes independent of the host’s hardware, they may support various kernel versions, or even completely different OSs.

This is one of full virtualization’s greatest advantages. Having only one OS version on every single server would require high homogeneity, generally rarely acquired and more so in hosting, where flexibility is a key factor. Furthermore, most full virtualization solutions allow for the installation of custom kernels, making it possible to use VPS technology with new device drivers and kernel level technologies not anticipated by the provider.

Of course, these advantages come at a cost. Full virtualization generally requires more system resources and, as such, is more expensive to host. The ability to install custom kernels and operating systems introduces additional administrative overhead which, in the wrong hands, can render full virtual machines much less stable than are their OS-level counterparts.

Virtualization technology has begun to completely revolutionize our concept of web and other forms of hosting. The choice is not confined to the limited shared hosting and expensive dedicated servers anymore. To benefit from from the emergence of new hosting alternatives, it is crucial to understand the virtualization landscape and know all available options.
