Believe it or not, SEO is a very important thing when it comes to running a site online. SEO is a good idea because ti doesnt just get you rankings in Google but improved traffic is likely to give you more money coming in which of course is always nice.
So How Does SEO Work?
A company that is good in offering the SEO service will know exactly what they are doing and they will target terms that are great for the business and get those terms ranking highly in Google. It is not impossible for a limited amount of SEO to be done internally but I would certainly not recommend just doing this as if you do this the likelihood is that you will not be using SEO to the full potential that you could be using it for.
Basically a trained SEO Engineer will assess the site and look into the terms that he/she thinks are best for you to target. You could just come back and say no I do not like these terms and I want to go after these ones but you must take into consideration that a trained SEO knows what they are doing. If you are a smaller site then the chances are you have no chance of targeting the bigger terms until you at least have a small foothold on the smaller ones. This is just one of the many reasons why an SEO may suggest you go for some of the smaller terms.
An SEO is not all about off site activity and they may tell you that you need a bit of web design to sort out some of the things on the site. This should always be taken into mind because a good site will allow an SEO to optimise the way that they do things in a better way.
So the next time you look into the SERPS and see you are not doing that well you may want to look into SEO!
