Finding the History and Origin of Ballroom Dance

Ballroom dance means kind of social dances where a couple would dance together following very common steps.  Ballroom dance is a derivation from the word ‘ball’ (social events attended by elites in the early 18th century), that consecutively originates from the Latin word ‘ballare’ meaning “to dance” that successively comes from the Latin word ‘ballare’ with the meaning ‘to dance’.  The most common ballroom dance forms can be distinguished into Viennese Waltz, Modern Waltz, Slow Foxtrot, Tango, Quickstep and the various forms of Latin Dances.

Originating somewhere betwixt the late 18th and early 19th century in England, ballroom dance was practiced by the privileged class in parties and balls. By degrees over time and during the nineteenth century, ballroom dance became a fad among the working classes and middle classes who took part in social dance events. In the nineteen hundred twenties, the reputation of ballroom dance contests rose dramatically with the result of the setting up of the Ballroom Branch of the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing in Nineteen twenty-four that was instrumental in standardizing the steps, music and performance of ballroom dance.

Presently ballroom dance is practiced in Europe, the Asian-Pacific and The Americas too.  It is common to find formal ballroom dance competitions, known as DanceSport, for ballroom dancers at different proficiency levels. The different ballroom dance types originate from different backgrounds and have unique aesthetics, rhythms, techniques and tempos.  Despite these differences, all ballroom dance types do share similar traits.

Performed by two people (usually a man and woman), these dances require that they dance in a certain arrangement which is very famously termed as the ‘Close Hold’.  This position requires the two people to maintain five areas of contact – three hand contact points wherein the man’s left hand holds the woman’s right hand, the woman’s left hand is positioned on the man’s right upper arm and the man’s right hand is placed below the left shoulder blade on the woman’s back;  one elbow contact point wherein the woman’s left elbow is placed on the man’s right elbow and both arms are maintained in a horizontal line contributing to the ease of movement; one chest contact point wherein the right area of the chest of the man touches the right area of the woman contributing to the expression of feelings and emotions between the two. To conclude, being one of the finest expressions of love, joyfulness and pain between two people, ballroom dance is a fad that will never fade away.

Secrets to Making Your Band Great

There is more to creating a successful band than just bringing a group of good musicians together; there are many other factors to consider. This article outlines some of these factors, which may help you to avoid the kinds of struggles that most bands face when striving for success.

First, there is group direction.
You’ll need to discuss and agree upon the direction your band is working toward, even before touching your instruments. Of course, a band can go in different directions. For example, a “60/40″ band will play two types of music: 60 percent will be traditional pop songs, and 40 percent will be Top 40 tunes. A band that has chosen to take this direction can expect to get most of its jobs at dances, hotels, weddings, and other events of a similar nature. These kind of gigs can assure your band a steady income. This type of band will most likely be recognized primarily at the local level.

A different direction for a band is to concentrate on playing mostly original music, aiming for a recording contract and concert tours. If you choose this route, there probably won’t be a lot of money until you are really well known.

When you’re just starting out, you’ll gain a lot of experience, and money for better gear, by being a “60/40″ group. But whatever type group you decide upon, be sure to have everyone agree on the number of musicians, the types of instruments to play, and the style of music you would like to perform. For example, will it be a guitar band?

You’ll all need to really enjoy the music that you’re going to be playing. In order to gauge a music style’s popularity, as well as get a feel for which genre you would like to perform, it is a good idea to listen to other established groups’ live performances. And once you have chosen your style, don’t change it. Your crowds may get smaller because you’re playing to a niche, rather than trying to please everyone, but you’ll find greater satisfaction and success by pleasing a select group of people with your best performances rather than putting on average shows to larger crowds.

Another very important thing to consider is your group’s structure. Basically, a band is composed of two sections: the rhythm section and the lead section. The players in the rhythm section are the bass guitarist, the drummer and the rhythm guitarist. These musicians establish the beat and tempo of the song. The drummer and bass player set the beat up while the rhythm guitarist fills in and gives the whole rhythm a complete feeling.

The lead guitarist, keyboardist, and vocalist makes up the “Lead Section.” This section of players embellishes the beat established by the rhythm section with vocals, melodies, and harmonies.

Each member needs to be doing their part while making sure not to over do it. The key is to work as a team so that you can create a smooth sound.

If your band is serious about being out there and creating a big impact with your performances, then rehearsal time (a lot of it) should be a top priority for you over almost everything else (except maybe sleep). It’s very important for a band to be organized and each member to be faithful to the group, as bands often split up over commitment troubles. In fact, it is a good idea to make sure you both establish and record the goals you as a band wish to achieve.

It’s true that rehearsal is essential for a band’s success, but I can’t stress enough the importance of playing for an audience. The experience you get on stage is 20 times what you’ll get in a rehearsal room. Develop a good stage presence and decide what kinds of things you want to say to your audience. Connecting with your audience is also very important. Practice your “audience chat” while you’re in the rehearsal room.

But be sure to practice solo as it is not all band work. You have a responsibility to the other band members to maintain and improve your skill level, and to know your music before you enter the rehearsal room. Working on band music outside of rehearsal can save you countless hours.

A successful, tight band strives for unity. If a band unites to work as one, it will make remarkable achievements.
